An Ode to New Adventure
“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."
"I don't much care where –"
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go.”― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
I always think that at a certain point in life, when you are in your 20s or even 60s, there will come a time that you will stop and ponder over some of your life decisions and think, "Hey, I can do way better than this."
With my wedding drawing to a near, and with new responsibilities ready to be hoisted onto my shoulder, I decided that I needed more from my current position as an analyst at an established asset management firm. I needed more money, more challenge, more knowledge, more guidance, and more money.
Okay, I admit, money was the end game.
Okay, I admit, money was the end game.
So against better judgement (was it though?), I took that first step out of my comfort zone and went out into that open sea.
I resigned.
You see, resignation to me, is a very personal matter; not because I am adverse to starting anew and face up to new challenges, but because I have what you call a "loyal lover" syndrome i.e. I have a tendency to stay in a place for a long time, come what may. Some call it stupidity.
Of course, prior to resigning, I sat down and actually spent time looking over the Pros and Cons to my course of action, sometimes monetary comfort alone is not enough to offset the sacrifices you are going to make in the future, but when the Pros outweighs the Cons, you just know the right decision is staring at you.
Pros:
1. Way more pay i.e. more shopping trips
2. More annual leave days
3. Focus on one task instead of doing ad hocs
4. Shorter working hours (2 hours shorter)
5. No redundant morning meetings
6. Expand my horizon and learn new knowledge, new experience from other gurus
7. Expose myself to new working culture and really fulfill one of my New Year resolution
Cons:
1. Out of comfort zone
2. Has to work on Saturday sometimes
3. Away from good friends
There is no way that I can be sure that I am actually on the right track, you see, life is like that; you get surprises all the time, minus the ribbons and confettis.
But if I don't do this now, WHEN? I owe this to myself, a new adventure that I don't know where it will leads to; or what, for that matter.
Here goes nothing.
